As a monochrome laser printer for heavy-duty use in small or micro offices or workgroups, Brother HL-L5200DW packs a lot of kindness into his small frame. It is quick to price and speed rating, excellent text prints, has a wide range of connection options, provides good paper handling, and has a low cost of ownership. The combination of features and performance makes HL-L5200DW great value and an easy choice as editors ‘ Choice.
Design and Features
At 10 by 14.7 by 15.3 inches (HWD), and £23.5 Matte-Black HL-L5200DW is typical in size and weight for breeding. It should be easy enough for one person to move into place and be able to fit on the table in an emergency. One-line LCD facilitates setup and maintenance.
Paper handling is one of HL-L5200DW’s strengths. Auto-duplexer, to print on both sides of a piece of paper, comes standard. The monthly maximum cycle is 50,000 pages, grouping for heavy-duty use. The standard paper capacity is 300 sheets, between the main tray 250 sheets and the versatile feeder of 50 sheets. The optional 250-sheet and the 520-sheet tray is available, with a maximum sheet paper capacity of 1,340 with the addition of a 2 520-sheet tray. The standard paper capacity matches the editors ‘ Choice Dell B2360dn ($449.00 on Amazon), but with the model, you can only add one optional 550-sheet tray, for a maximum of 850 sheets. For a little more money, Brother HL-L6200DW ($219.99 on Amazon) offers a larger paper capacity than HL-L5200DW, a standard 570 sheet, and you can add an optional tray for a maximum of 1,610 sheets. For most of the micro and small offices, though, HL-L5200’s paper handling should be more than adequate.
Performance, print quality, and operational costs
Brother claimed the top speed of 40 ppm for HL-L5200DW, but I found this a little optimistic. Our 20-page long document returns a real-world speed of 30.8 ppm, which is still very respectable for printers in this class. The more distinctive 5-page text test gives 18.8 ppm, although this drops to 13.6 ppm on text and graphics documents.
It’s slower than 17.4 sides per minute we see on a 10-page version of our duplex 20-sided document. A 15 x 10cm photograph took only 7s from a cable PC, but twice that time from an Android phone.
Print quality, as is usually the case with Brother laser, is quite good. The text, at the default resolution of 1, 200dpi, is crisp and clear, with no toner splash visible. Business graphics are also clean and crisp, with enough variation in Greyscale to show a good range of colors from the original. The photos are a little ribbon in the place, but more than enough for general use.
The noise level peaked at 64dBA at 0.5 m, which is nothing more than a lot of inkjets and shouldn’t pose any problems, even if the printer is beside you at the table.
Using a high-capacity Toner Cartridge provides a page cost of 2.7 p, including 0.7 p for paper. This is great, without being overwhelming. At a higher printer purchase price, you might expect that the page cost is closer to 2p.
